The main responsibilities of the Roads Policing Unit are:
- Provision of a police presence on main arterial routes
- Investigation of fatal and serious collisions
- Promotion of road safety through education and enforcement
- Tackling criminals' use of the roads
- Maintenance of partnerships with other agencies involved in the regulation of road users
- The provision of Armed Response for the effective management of incidents requiring a firearms response. RPU supervision also provide the link to Police Officers and Staff within the Safety Camera Partnership.
Strategic Aim
‘The Cleveland Roads Policing Strategy will aim to make the roads of Cleveland safer by denying criminals the use of roads by enforcing the law, reducing road casualties, tackling the threat of terrorism, tackling the anti-social use of the roads and enhancing public confidence and reassurance by patrolling the roads. We will be intelligence-led, with the National Intelligence Model driving all of our activities.’
The 5 key priorities are: -
- Denying criminals the use of roads by enforcing the law and intelligence-led policing
- Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads, by working with our partners in relation to education, engineering and enforcement
- Tackling the threat of terrorism by use of intelligence and specific operations.
- Tackling the anti-social use of the roads by means of moderating driver behaviour through education and enforcement
- Enhancing public confidence and reassurance by patrolling the roads
Location
The Force and Authority welcomed Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary Denis O’Connor to open the new Roads Policing Unit at Wynyard Park. The £5.25m project is expected to meet the strategic requirements of the Force for the next 25 years and offers a range of new facilities including:
- A new building for the Roads Policing Unit.
- Rapid access to the A19 and other road systems in Cleveland.
- New office accommodation for Fleet Management and Roads Policing Administration.
- A central garage facility for the Roads Policing Unit with additional parking.
- The ability to house 135 staff and over 70 vehicles.
- Improved layout and improved staff facilities.
The state of the art building offers the latest technology to allow us to deliver the best service. Its location gives easy access to the A19 and other major routes throughout Cleveland, which is vital for emergency and operational response.
