They can come in many variations offering to transfer millions of dollars into your bank account or how you have won a foreign lottery! Be cautious, and always think before you act on any offer.

Most scams are looking for money or your bank details or PIN number. Scammers can be patient and will often build a relationship with their victim like "The Lonely Hearts Scam".

Scammers often pose as people stranded in Africa (possibly an American Serviceman or an oil worker) emailing photos and love notes to the victim and may even send cheap presents to believe their story and fall for them. Some may ask for a cash loan (sent by wire) or even to meet the victim. These scams have fleeced people in this country tens of thousands of pounds!

Always be aware of any ‘offer’ which requires money up front.  This may be in the form of legal fees, tax back schemes or members of a foreign royal family wanting to transfer millions to an account!

Lastly, don’t give anyone your PIN number!

Be vigilant, and should anyone ask for your PIN number refuse. Scammers will often already have some details of your card or sound very convincing posing as your bank or credit card company. They may lead you to think they are helping you – but be aware if they ask you to ‘confirm your card details’ or ‘provide your PIN number’.

Chances are …..  they’re thieves!

If you are ever in doubt – hang up and contact the company via a trusted telephone number to confirm the query.

There are various ways to prevent fraud and being a victim of the scam:

  • Guard your personal details – don’t give them to any organisation before verifying their details. Many frauds start with an email – don’t trust emails even if they look genuine.
  • Check with the company direct (not through the link in the email ).
  • Destroy, shred or burn receipts, bank cards and letters with your name and address on. Be very careful when you move house and get all your post redirected. Always check bank statements and all correspondence arriving at your home.
  • Make sure your computer has up to date anti-virus software and a firewall installed.
  • Check your credit file for entries you don’t recognise.
  • Never divulge your PIN number to anyone!

Be aware of Scams!
