Fishing for Keys

Burglary offences in Cleveland are the lowest for 30 years, but even one burglary victim is one too many – especially if that victim is you.

Letterbox

House Burglaries take many forms and can often be as simple as ‘fishing’ items out through your letter box or open window.

I have attended a few burglaries where thieves use a home made implement to reach through the letterbox and ‘fish’ house and car keys from the hall and even items out of handbags.

This is a common way of thieves stealing cars – ‘fishing’ the keys out through the letterbox.

So what can you do to prevent this type of crime?

You can fit a lock to your letterbox but the easiest way is to not leave keys and other valuables near your front door.

Try and get into good security habits:

  • Keeping your front and back doors locked
  • Putting your car in the garage overnight
  • Don’t leave keys or valuables on show
  • Set your house alarm overnight
