Residents Praised as Police Celebrate Drop in Crime, Central Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough’s central Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) is celebrating an encouraging reduction in criminal damage and anti-social behaviour.

Figures for June 2010 show that criminal damage is down by 26.2% when compared with the same period last year and anti-social behaviour has reduced by 13.2%

Officers have carried out a number of initiatives to achieve these figures and they also acknowledge the huge contribution made by local people.

Neighbourhood Policing Sgt Sharon Cooney said: “These excellent figures reflect the hard work of ward officers, PCSOs and local residents who are simply not prepared to tolerate these crimes in their community.

“Tenants who cause misery and nuisance are also tackled quickly, in partnership with landlords and the local authority.”

Sgt Cooney urged anyone who would like to discuss neighbourhood issues with their local NPT to call 01642 302900.

And Neighbourhood Insp Tina Robson added: Despite the excellent reductions we have already achieved, we will not be complacent and initiatives such as Operation Anvil in Whinney Banks, which targets anti-social behaviour and other crime, will run throughout the summer.

“The police command vehicle is in Middlesbrough Jewel Streets this week and it will also be deployed around the town in the coming weeks.  I would encourage residents to stop by and speak to their neighbourhood officers and the local authority’s anti-social behaviour team.”
