One of Middlesbrough’s brand new Neighbourhood Crime Teams has already made two arrests for burglary on its first day. The two specialist teams were launched on 1st September to further reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the town.
Each new team consists of a Sergeant and six Constables from a variety of roles including Response, Neighbourhood and CID. This mix of officers provides a wealth of knowledge and experience that can be used in the fight against crime. Together the teams will focus on identified areas of crime and respond to intelligence in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime.
Crime Teams will be given targets based on intelligence and identified hotspots, alongside their day to day work. Working closely with the Neighbourhood Policing Teams and in partnership with other local agencies, the team will swoop in on them utilising their mix of skills. Their work should build on the successful work already being carried out in Middlesbrough to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
Temporary Detective Inspector John Wrintmore, of Middlesbrough CID said: “This is an exciting new initiative and opportunity which will undoubtedly build on successes already seen within Middlesbrough to cut crime and anti-social behaviour.
“The teams, drawn from various areas of expertise, will have the experience and freedom to target specific areas and criminals according to intelligence and crime trends.
“Their work will be a combination of high visibility policing, providing a preventative presence and reassurance but will also include more covert policing methods.
“Indeed on their very first shift, acting upon intelligence, the teams have today arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of burglary and recovered property stolen in a burglary. This I’m sure is the first of many successes which the teams will feedback to the local communities where they are operating.”
