Drink Spiking

What is it?

  • Drink spiking is when substances, alcohol or drugs, are added to your drink without your knowledge or consent.
  • Drink spiking with intent to commit a sexual assault or other serious criminal act is an offence that may result in 10 years in prison.
  • Drink spiking does not just happen to women - men have their drinks spiked too.

Substances added to your drink might leave no taste and can even be colourless.

Substances added to your drink can be fast acting - within a few minutes but the effects can last for several hours.

Why do people do it?

People spike drinks for many reasons. Some might consider it to be a laugh - but the consequences can be harmful and are certainly not a joke. Others have more sinister motives and simply seek to do you harm through sexual assault or robbery.

What effect might drink spiking have?

Common drugs act as a suppressant when mixed with alcohol and this reduces your ability to resist an attack from others.

Drink spiking might induce effects beyond what you might expect from the consumption of relatively small amounts of alcohol. Those effects might include

  • Disorientation
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Paranoia
  • Amnesia
  • Inability to communicate properly

What can you do to protect yourself?

  • Don't accept drinks from strangers
  • Don't swap drinks
  • Watch your drink being poured - there will be less chance for it to be tampered with.
  • Don't leave your drink unattended. If you have to leave your drink for any reason, leave it with someone you know and trust until you return.
  • Don't drink from someone else's glass or bottle and drink drinks left by others.
  • If you begin to feel unwell or unusually drunk - tell someone you trust and ask them to take you home.
  • If you have unusual symptoms or think your drink might have been tampered with, consider obtaining medical help.
  • Know your limits and drink sensibly - if you do, you will know when something is not right.

The main objective is to look after yourself, enjoy your night out and stay safe.

REMEMBER - DRINK SENSIBLY, STAY SAFE.
