The Tall Ships event in Hartlepool starts today, Thursday 6th July and will run through to Sunday 10th July, when the ships leave for their next destination in the race.
Chief Superintendent Dave Sutherland, who is leading the Cleveland Police operation for the event, said: “We are proud to be part of Tall Ships 2023 in Hartlepool, and we expect this to be fantastic family weekend for those living in the town and for those visiting for the event.
“The safety of the public is of paramount importance to Cleveland Police and due to the expected large crowds, like with other large-scale events, the public will see both uniformed and specialist units such as armed officers out on patrol.
“Working closely with the event organisers and our partner agencies, we hope to keep disruption in the town to a minimum. We would advise those travelling on the roads to check the Tall Ships website in advance to plan your route and book parking, or park and ride. With many also expected to travel by rail, we would also advise people to check the latest train times and train travel news.
“If you do see a crime taking place or have any concerns about someone acting suspiciously at the event, pass details onto a patrolling officer or call 101.
“Whilst our priority is always the safety of the public, officers on duty will be engaging with members of the public - so if you do see an officer please stop and say hello, and maybe take a picture with them”.
