Detectives have praised a victim’s courage after the man who raped her as a teenager was sentenced to 10 years in prison today, Thursday 15th June.
52-year-old Jan Joseph Newcombe was found guilty of two rapes dating back to 2007.
Newcombe was also handed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) and a restraining order.
Detective Sergeant Lexi Edmonds, who investigated the case said: “The victim in this case has shown great courage in finally coming forward to report these crimes to us.
“Newcombe had been someone she trusted as a young, vulnerable victim and he abused that position of trust. Naturally, she found it difficult to report this abuse, but finally found the strength to do it.
“I would like to thank her for trusting us and supporting us through our investigation.
“Hopefully this sentence will bring some closure and help her to rebuild her life again.
“This case shows that no matter how many years have passed, that victims can still see justice done. I would encourage anyone who may have been abused and not reported it, to come forward and speak to us. Whenever you are ready to report, we are here to support.
“You will be listened to, believed and supported through every step of the investigation and the criminal justice process.
