Members of the public are being reminded of crime prevention steps to take in relation to a recent spike in thefts of motorbikes and attempted thefts of motorbikes in the Hemlington area.
Some of these reports have included motorbikes stolen from garages and gardens.
Thieves often look out for particular bike models, so using a cover can make it less attractive to them and can also provide a time-consuming obstacle.
Officers would advise people to consider a ground anchor if possible and a large chain and lock to secure their motorbikes. Fitting an alarm can also be a good deterrent and a tracking device.
Disc locks for front wheels are not recommended as they can be easy to remove.
Always try to park in an area near to your home where it’s well overlooked with good lighting.
Sergeant Des Horton from Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Team said: “Whilst we are doing everything we can to tackle those who are carrying out these thefts, we would ask people to put in place measures which can potentially make motorbikes less attractive to thieves.
“Security measures cannot guarantee that your bike won’t be stolen, but by carrying out simple security measures, it could be enough of a deterrent to stop a thief from stealing it.”
