Detectives praise sexual assault survivor as attacker is jailed

Detectives have praised the incredible strength and bravery of a sexual assault survivor as their attacker was jailed.

An investigation by Cleveland Police's CAVA Team (Child Abuse and Vulnerable Adults) was launched in 2022 after the victim reported the incident to police.

Stephen Emers, 63, from Stockton was arrested and subsequently charged with sexual assault and he was due to stand trial earlier this year.

However, on the first day of the trial, Emers pleaded guilty to the offence and he appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Friday 19^th April for sentencing.

The judge handed him a 9-month prison sentence and imposed a life-long restraining order. Emers was also ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for 10 years.

Temporary Detective Sergeant, Natasha Barber, said: “I welcome the sentence that was passed. Even though the victim did not attend court, she still has to relive the trauma of what happened every day.

“I’d like to thank the victim for her unwavering support throughout this process. She has shown incredible strength and bravery. Hopefully now she can begin to move on with her life.”

CAVA Detective Inspector Nicky Barker added: “I’d remind anyone who has experienced sexual abuse that it’s never too late to report to police; we have specially trained officers who will support you throughout.
