The 22-year-old was driving along Grangefield Road with no back lights shortly before 11pm on Tuesday 20 August.
When officers from Cleveland Police's Matrix team requested the driver pull over, he made off at speed.
A pursuit began and a short time later the black Vauxhall Astra was stung, and it came to a stop on Bishopton Road West.
Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and located a large machete.
He was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, failing to stop for police, drug driving and driving with no insurance or driving licence.
After being taken to custody, he was questioned and subsequently released on conditional bail.
The vehicle has since been recovered.
