The collision took place at the junction of West Lane and Connaught Road and involved a pedestrian and an off-road bike.
The unknown rider of the quad bike collided with a 15-year-old boy who was taken to James Cook University Hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The rider is believed to have paid the boy a small amount of money at the scene but he left the scene before police arrived.
It occurred at around 5.45pm on Tuesday 13 February.
Sergeant Chris Lindsey said: “As part of our ongoing enquiries I am keen to hear from members of the public who may have witnessed the collision take place, have information or dash cam footage that could assist in identifying the ride of the quad bike.
“I also want to take this opportunity to encourage the rider himself to get in contact with officers as soon as possible.”
