The burglary occurred at a property on Cramlington Close at approximately 5.30pm on Wednesday 14 February.
While the occupants were inside, an unknown offender has opened the front door, searched the property and stolen the keys to a red Nissan Qashqai which has a distinctive silver petrol cap on the rear panel and a white ski mask sticker near the back of the side window.
The offender has then driven away in the vehicle.
Officers have been conducting numerous enquiries and have now released photographs of the vehicle and are appealing for information, CCTV and dash cam footage to assist in locating it and finding the person responsible.
Detective Constable John Saunders, from Middlesbrough CID, said: “Burglary can be a particularly distressing crime as it occurs in a place where people should feel most safe.
“We are doing all we can to establish the identity of the criminal and have been following a numerous lines of enquiry.
“As part of my investigation I am keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the area around the time it took place or have any information, CCTV or dash cam footage which could assist us.”
