Officers are appealing for witnesses to an incident on Stockton High Street, near to Wellington Square on the evening of Sunday 7 January.
At around 5:50pm, a 36-year-old man sustained several slash injuries to his face when he was attacked by two men.
The men are described as wearing masks, one wearing a blue top and the other a black top.
The victim suffered serious injury to his face and was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees where is still receiving treatment.
Witnesses are asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101 quoting reference number 003942.
