Police were alerted to an aggravated burglary at High Newham Court in Hardwick, Stockton, when they received a call at 5am on Monday 8 January.
A 47-year-old man inside of the property sustained slash injuries to his face and hand and was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees. A 31-year-old woman fled the property uninjured.
A 42-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and grievous bodily harm. He was questioned by officers, then released on bail whilst further enquiries continue.
