New figures show that Teesside is an even safer place for residents to live following a 26 per cent reduction in the number of recorded residential burglaries.
It covers the period of June 2024 in comparison with the same month last year.
The force recorded 353 residential burglaries in June 2023 and then 262 offences in June 2024.
That is 91 fewer offences reported with notable reductions specifically in the areas of Hartlepool (40 per cent) and Stockton (39 per cent).
Overall, the force has also recorded a reduction (19 per cent) of residential burglaries in the latest 12-month period, with 776 fewer crimes.
A 27-year-old man was sentenced in May when he broke into the home of recently bereaved parents, disturbing precious memories in Billingham. Officers swiftly attended to the home and apprehended him at the scene.
A 40-year-old man is serving 10-years behind bars after climbing through the bedroom window of a house in Norton while the occupant was inside. CCTV enquiries captured him entering the house and he was detained by officers in possession of a bag with items stolen from the house.
Assistant Chief Constable David Felton said: “These figures demonstrate the hard work of Cleveland Police officers and staff to target criminals to protect residents living in our community.
“Our improvement in tackling residential burglaries is thanks to a huge drive-in our proactivity to identify the issue early and tackle it head on.
“This includes researching and analysing intelligence to identify hot spot areas and conducting plain clothed operations at various times throughout the day and night. This approach has led to the arrest and subsequent prosecution of a number of suspects.
“An important part of tackling this crime comes from our neighbourhood officers speaking to our local community. They regularly provide some simple but effective advice on how to protect homes from burglars and issuing residents with various security equipment.
“This should also set a strong message to anyone who thinks that they can commit burglaries in Teesside, and I hope it reassures members of the public that we are acting on information that is provided to us and we will continue to take action.”
