Partnership working drives down commercial burglary in Redcar & Cleveland.

Actively identifying and pursuing key offenders, then achieving charges and remands has been one of the key means of driving down commercial burglaries across Redcar & Cleveland.

A senior officer also highlighted the value of police and local authority partners sharing information and best practice - as well as working closely with retailers.

Commercial burglary has fallen generally across Cleveland; in June this year there were 51 reported offences (40% lower than June 2023).

Redcar & Cleveland district which had recently seen a large rise in commercial burglary saw just 12 recorded offences - over 29% fewer than last June.

Acting Superintendent Dave Snaith said: “These crimes affect our businesses, their hardworking staff and the public who use them.

“Proactive patrols by our neighbourhood officers play a vital role in preventing some crimes happening in the first place and officers also gather useful information whilst out and about.

“This complements our everyday work where my detectives join colleagues from our district’s response and neighbourhood teams to discuss with local authority partners any emerging crime trends or so-called hot spot areas.

“These have usually been identified by keeping in touch with businesses and from our own analysts and intelligence officers’ work, as well as by officers on the ground and the local authority and their CCTV teams.  It just means we can place resources in the locations where they’re needed the most and we can actively target key offenders and anyone else we believe to be committing commercial burglaries.

“We’ve seen some good arrests, charges and remands which have definitely contributed to the fall in incidents.

“We’ll continue working closely with retailers and I want to reassure them that police and partners will do all we can to protect their staff and businesses from those intent on committing crime.”
