Hartlepool has seen a reduction in vehicle crime in the town with 29 fewer recorded offences in June 2024 compared to June 2023. This is a 58 per cent reduction and a 19 per cent reduction over the last 12 months.
Numbers have dropped despite a recent spate of vehicle crime in the West Park area of the town, where several vehicles were broken into or tampered with.
Investigating officers quickly identified the suspect and arrested him, managing to secure charges. He has since appeared at court charged in connection with several charges of theft from a vehicle and vehicle interference.
Hartlepool District Commander Superintendent Martin Hopps said: “Analytical work to determine when and where these crimes were taking place, then deploying officers on additional night time patrols have helped to reduce this type of crime.
“When we get spikes in thefts from cars there is usually one suspect responsible for the majority of the crimes, as was the case a few weeks ago. Our officers act quickly to identify suspects and seek justice.
“The figures are moving in the right direction, which is great news, but we are not complacent and will continue with our work to tackle vehicle crime in the town.”
