Shortly after 1pm on Tuesday 18 June police were called to a one-vehicle-collision on Marton Road.
The white KIA was reversing out of the driveway when the driver suffered a medical episode at the wheel and collided with a tree.
Sadly, despite efforts by paramedics, the 87-year-old man died at the scene.
An 81-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to James Cook University Hospital and is currently in a serious but stable condition.
Enquiries in relation to the collision are ongoing and officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are also encouraging anyone who lives in the area or was driving there at the time the collision occurred and has dash cam or CCTV footage of the collision to get in touch.
PC Martin Tranmer, from Cleveland Police’s specialist operations unit, said: “Our investigation is in the early stages, and we are establishing the circumstances that led to the collision.
“To assist with our investigation and as part of our enquiries I am keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the collision take place and for those who have dash cam or CCTV footage to please get in touch.”
