Detectives have praised the incredible strength and bravery of two sexual abuse survivors as their attacker was jailed.
An investigation by Cleveland Police's CAVA Team (Child Abuse and Vulnerable Adults) was launched in 2019 after two victims reported historical sexual abuse to police.
Martin Hayes, 62, was due to be interviewed about the incidents which occurred between mid-1980s and mid-1990s but was out of the country.
Coronavirus restrictions caused further delays in the investigation but in December 2023, Hayes was arrested when he flew into Heathrow Airport and was charged with a string of offences which he denied.
On Friday 7th June following a trial, Hayes was found guilty of 12 offences including five counts of rape and seven counts of indecent assault.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday 25th June where he was jailed for 29 years.
Hayes was also given a restraining order banning contact with the victims and placed of the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Allan said: “I would like to take this opportunity to commend the victims for their courage in this case.
“They have been extremely brave in coming forward to report this abuse. Their voices have been heard, they have been believed and justice has been served with the guilty verdict and the significant sentence.
“It has not been an easy journey with the delay in arresting Hayes but they have shown amazing strength during this difficult time and were supported throughout the whole process.”
It’s never too late to report an incident to police, we have specially trained officers who will support you throughout.
You can report at any time of day or night online via the Cleveland Police website or by phoning 101.
