You told us the issues you want us to tackle. Here are the updates on what our officers have carried out 👇:
🔵 Youth antisocial behaviour (ASB) in central Redcar.
In recent months there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of young people in central Redcar involved in ASB, especially on the Esplanade (particularly in the amusement arcades and food outlets), the High Street, McDonalds and out towards Morrisons and Tesco.
Over the last few months, we’ve targeted this behaviour. As well as dealing with ASB we have recovered weapons, controlled drugs and counterfeit currency.
We’re working closely with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council (RCBC) and are supporting their Antisocial Behaviour Campaign.
We’ve identified many of the young people involved, done home visits with the RCBC ASB Team and delivered letters explaining some of the ASB and impact of it in the community to parents/guardians of those involved.
In addition to traditional sanctions, we’ve worked with the local authority and, where appropriate, with the Youth Offending Team and engaged some young people in Immediate Justice and the Turnaround programmes. Some young people are completing work as part of a community resolution, with another young person now involved in volunteering in the community.
We’ve secured the services of the Streetz youth workers in the area to help provide diversionary activities and deliver positive education and messaging to young people on Friday nights.
We will continue to use dispersal orders where appropriate. In law these can only be granted for a maximum of 48 hours but they can, on occasion, be extended. As a sector priority, resources from other areas are being drafted in the ward to help combat any ASB.
🔵Crime with repeat callers and victims in Redcar centred around Coatham ward but impacting wider.
Coatham ward is the busiest ward in our area due to the mixture of residential areas, leisure facilities, the beach area, the High Street retail area, and concentration of nighttime economy venues with licensed pubs and clubs.
Some individuals involved in criminality here also have committed offences in surrounding wards and out towards Marske and Saltburn. We have been targeting those who have been causing most harm within the community.
We’ve made arrests for offences of burglary and theft from motor vehicles in addition to retail thefts. Due to offending patterns, we also have executed a drugs warrant and made arrests on suspicion of supplying drugs - offences that also link to wider criminality and acquisitive crime.
To try to tackle those responsible for these offences, we are looking beyond securing a conviction and preparing applications for some individuals where a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) would be appropriate.
We are working with the Local Authority and Crown Prosecution Service to apply for CBOs that could then impose prohibitions on an individual to prevent them entering certain areas which would help protect communities and specific stores.
🔵Tackling a recurring community issue within the Brotton ward to reduce demand and protect victims.
Over the last few months police have received a large number of calls relating to ongoing tensions in an area. This has resulted in arrests and a huge amount of time being spent investigating and dealing with incidents. We are involved with other partner agencies to both support any vulnerable victims and gather evidence. By having this as a priority and with a problem-solving approach, we aim to reduce demand on services, protect victims and bring offenders to justice.
