The 18-year-old suffered a wound to his ankle believed to have been caused by a firearm.
He received treatment at the University Hospital of North Tees for the non-life threatening injury.
The stabbing is believed to have occurred shortly after 2pm on Saturday 16 March as he walked along the Black Path between Portrack and Tilery.
Detectives are treating it as a targeted attack.
While enquiries are ongoing to identify those who are responsible, police are appealing to members of the public to come forward if they saw a vehicle leaving the area at the time the assaut took place.
