A 39-year-old Middlesbrough man who was convicted in early January of 10 charges of sexual activity with a child has been jailed for ten years, issued a restraining order for ten years and given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
This follows an investigation by Cleveland Police’s CAVA Team (Child Abuse and Vulnerable Adults) after the force received allegations in Autumn 2019 that Jonathan Burton had abused a vulnerable teenage boy.
CAVA detectives supported the boy and his family throughout their enquiries, and officers attended the trial at Teesside Crown Court in January where he was found guilty of all the charges put to him.
And on Friday 15th March he was sentenced at the same court.
Officer in the Case CAVA Detective Constable Mel Phelps said: “I welcome the sentence issued to Burton; we will deal with anyone who abuses vulnerable children and young people and support is always available throughout any investigation and subsequent trial.
“I do hope this result brings a degree of comfort for the victim as they continue to rebuild their life.”
CAVA Detective Chief Inspector Matt Murphy-King added: “I would urge anyone who has experienced abuse or who has concerns about someone they suspect has been affected to contact Cleveland Police at any time. This can be done online through the website or by phoning 101.
“My officers will investigate thoroughly all allegations - recent or non-recent - in a professional and sensitive manner and they’ll always place the victim’s wellbeing at their heart of their enquiries.”
