At around 4.20pm on Sunday 10 March officers stopped a man on Clifton Avenue after he was spotted allegedly trying to open car doors.
The man was searched, and officers recovered an item believed to have been stolen from a vehicle.
The 32-year-old was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and motorvehicle interference. He has since been released on bail.
Officers investigating the theft are now appealing to members of the public who believe they may have had items stolen from their cars, to come forward.
PC Jefferson, from Hartlepool’s response policing team, said: “Following numerous lines of enquiry we believe that there could have been items stolen from inside cars. There I am encouraging anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of this crime to please get in touch.
“You can do this by calling Cleveland Police on 101 quoting reference number 043914.”
