Officers were made aware of a video that had been circulated on social media showing a man being assaulted by a group of people in the town centre.
The assault is believed to have taken place on Linthorpe Road between 9pm and 9.45pm on Saturday 11 May 2024.
At least seven men have attacked the man by punching and kicking him as well as stamping on his head while he lay on the floor.
Following enquiries, officers believe the victim had spoken to Boro Angels who offered him assistance by calling for an ambulance, however he left the scene before it had arrived.
At 10pm, the man was sighted speaking with door staff at Intrepid Explorer on Linthorpe Road. He was joined by two other men who he is believed to know and walked in the direction of the Swatters Carr pub.
The victim is described as white, approximately 5’5” tall with brown hair. He was wearing dark grey joggers, grey T-shirt and had a man bag.
PC Jason Bowes said: “Since being alerted to the video showing the assault taking place, we have been conducting numerous enquiries including reviewing the video and subsequent CCTV footage.
“While these enquiries continue, I am encouraging the man who was attacked to please make contact with police. I would also encourage any member of the public who think they may know who he is, or the offenders involved in the assault, to get in touch with us.
“It was a nasty assault, and we are determined to locate the victim and his attackers.”
