Officers were travelling along Westbury Street on the morning of Monday 11 November when they spotted a car that appeared to be driving suspiciously.
Once activating their blue lights, the driver fled at a dangerous speed on Peel Street.
The vehicle was located abandoned a short time later near to Cardwell Walk in Thornaby.
A search of the car led to a weapon that consisted of a homemade wooden baton being recovered from inside the boot.
Enquiries are now ongoing to identify the driver of the vehicle and officers are appealing for anyone who has information, CCTV or dash cam footage to contact Cleveland Police either via the website or by calling 101 and quoting reference number 216128.
Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
