A campaign aimed at raising awareness of preventing homes from being targeted by burglars has been launched in Cleveland.
As the clocks go back this weekend and the darker nights draw in, the number of reports of residential burglaries to Cleveland Police may potentially increase.
Whilst there has been a 22.7% reduction in residential burglaries in the last 12 months in Cleveland, officers are not complacent and are absolutely determined to reduce the number of victims even further.
A dedicated website page with crime prevention advice which could help prevent burglars from targeting homes is being highlighted in a series of radio ads on Global radio.
The webpage includes advice around keeping doors and windows secure, lighting your home even if you’re not in and CCTV.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Snaith, Force lead on burglary, said: “Every victim of burglary is one too many. Burglary is an intrusive crime which can have a traumatic and long-lasting impact upon victims; leaving some unnerved and scared to sleep in their own beds, as highlighted in our radio ads.
“The ads feature the words of a victim from a recent case, who was subjected to a burglary as she slept, and her savings and belongings stolen. She suffered a terrifying ordeal and the suspect was later jailed for ten years, with three years on extended licence.
“We don’t want anyone to go through any burglary and want to help prevent further incidents and so we would urge everyone to read the crime prevention advice on the Cleveland Police website, which could help deter criminals.
“I want to be clear that, we know if someone is burgled this of course does not mean that they have done anything wrong. We are just trying to encourage all residents to be vigilant and follow our simple steps to potentially deter burglars.”
