Two dog handlers, PC Walker and PC McDonald from Cleveland Police’s Matrix Team, are completing a course to become police dog trainers.
The four-week course involves both theoretical knowledge and practical skills; including everything from tracking to apprehending criminals. Some specialist dog training will also be covered, including training for those dogs who search for drugs, cash and firearms.
Dog Support Unit Sergeant, Jimmy Grieves, said; “Adding further resources into the training department means we can meet the demands to keep our dogs and handlers trained to be the ‘best they can be’. We will also be able to deliver more training in the operational environment, during operational shifts.
“Uplifting our instructor capabilities will ensure we are compliant with the new Dog Authorised Professional Practice, provide the best service to the public, tackle crime and keep our communities safe.
“We would like to thank our colleagues at Cumbria Police for their warm welcome and providing the training course.”
