Shortly after 5.30pm on Monday 3 February police were called to Norton Road in Stockton following concerns for a woman.
Officers attended to the area and the woman, aged 20, was taken to hospital with injuries to her hand.
A 61-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, section 18 assault and false imprisonment.
He is currently in police custody for questioning. Officers will be in the area conducting enquiries and to provide reassurance to the local community.
