The 35-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested on Thursday 20 February and taken to police custody for questioning.
It comes following reports of a man, aged 68, walking his dog when he was approached by another man who allegedly made threats to steal his dog.
Officers attended to Trenchard Avenue at around 11am and arrested a man nearby.
He has since been charged in connection with attempted robbery and remanded in custody to appear at Teesside Magistrates Court on Friday 21 February.
