Around 8am today (Thursday 6th February) officers received a report of a stolen Mercedes Sprinter van used to deliver sandwiches from the area of Riverside Industrial Estate in Middlesbrough.
Matrix officers got a slice of the action when they pursued the van into Thornaby, where the driver abandoned the vehicle and made off on Clifton Way. He was detained on Eltham Crescent, where an officer was also assaulted.
The incident was wrapped up 37 minutes after the reported theft with the arrest of a 24-year-old man on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, assaulting an emergency worker and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He remains in police custody at this time.
The van was also recovered by officers.
