At around 9.45pm on Tuesday 18 February, officers received a report of a man assaulting a woman near to a lamppost on Thornaby Road at the junction of Laburnum Avenue in Thornaby.
Officers were deployed to the area and despite a search, the man and the woman weren’t located.
It is suspected that the woman, who was wearing a long dark coloured knee length puffer coat and has light brown or ginger shoulder length hair, was shouting and screaming.
Since the report, officers have been conducting numerous enquiries in a bid to identify and locate the woman and are appealing for her to come forward.
They are also appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault, have CCTV or dash cam footage that could assist the investigation, to get in touch.
