A prolific shoplifter from Redcar has been jailed after he was quickly arrested by officers for breaching his Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).
Kieron Smith, 23, was issued with a CBO by the courts in July 2024 after he was convicted of a number of shoplifting offences.
The CBO is in place until July 2026 and prevents Smith from entering any Sainsbury's stores in Saltburn and Marske as well as causing harassment, alarm or distress to the community.
Officers received reports that meat and alcohol was stolen from Sainsbury’s in Saltburn on 14th and 15th February as well as another shoplifting report at Sainsbury’s in Marske on 15th February.
Smith was soon identified as a suspect and he was quickly arrested by officers from Redcar and East Cleveland Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT).
He was charged with three shoplifting offences and three counts of breaching a CBO.
Smith was remanded in police custody and appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on 18th February where he pleaded guilty to all offences.
He appeared at court on the same day where he sentenced to a total of 52 weeks imprisonment.
NPT Inspector Neil Deluce said: “This is a fantastic result which shows how effective CBOs can be. Smith repeatedly breached the order by continuing his offending and now he faces the consequences of his actions.
“We will continue to pursue those committing crime in our towns and causing harm to retail staff and shoppers. As always, I’d encourage anyone with information about crime or antisocial behaviour in their area to contact us on 101.”
