Officers from Middlesbrough CID arrested a wanted man this morning, Monday 24th February at Manchester Airport after receiving intelligence that he had booked a one-way flight to Munich.
The man was wanted in connection with two incidents where a property in central Middlesbrough was burgled twice on the 29th and 31st January 2025.
Electrical items and jewellery were stolen from the first burglary, and it is believed the suspect also stole a house key as he returned to the property a few days later.
This time the occupants were home, and the suspect assaulted two of the occupants. A woman aged 29 was knocked unconscious and another woman, also aged 29, was kicked down the stairs.
Since the incidents, officers managed to recover some of the stolen items and fast tracked these items through forensics to retrieve DNA. Once they knew who the DNA was linked to, arrest attempts were made with no success, but the team received some intelligence that the suspect had booked himself onto a flight out of the country.
Two officers from Middlesbrough CID used this intelligence and travelled to Manchester Airport this morning where they successfully arrested the suspect in connection with the incidents.
He now remains in police custody.
Speaking of the arrest, Chief Inspector John Bonner from Middlesbrough CID said: “I am incredibly proud of my team for going above and beyond to locate this suspect. It was clear that once he booked a one-way flight, he was not planning on returning and no stone has been left unturned to trace him.
“Not only did the victims have their home invaded but they were also assaulted, and this must have been terrifying. One of the victims is still seeking medical assistance because of the assault.
“I hope this arrest is a clear warning to others that if you have committed a horrendous crime, we will do absolutely everything in our power to locate you and bring you to justice."
