Following a misconduct hearing held this week (16th-19th June), PC Ian Coverdale has been immediately dismissed from Cleveland Police. PC Coverdale was found to have breached the standards of professional behaviour for police officers; including discreditable conduct, integrity and respect and courtesy.
The behaviour which PC Coverdale is now proven to have carried out not only amounts to gross misconduct, but as a result of his actions the decision was made today (Thursday 19th June) to dismiss PC Coverdale from Cleveland Police with immediate effect.
Detective Superintendent Karen Naunton, Head of Cleveland Police Directorate of Standards and Ethics, said: “The behaviour of PC Coverdale on the evening of the 15th December 2023 was totally unacceptable. The victim of this behaviour provided very compelling evidence to the panel, and I would like to thank her for coming forward.
“Any officer who does not uphold the standards of behaviour that are expected of them, and brings the police service into disrepute, can expect that they will be held to account for their actions. Where necessary, those officers will also be removed from policing and placed on the barred list.
“We continue to be committed to ensuring that we have a workforce which operates with the highest levels of integrity and professionalism, as the public rightly expect.”
