The force’s proactive team spotted the black Ford Kuga on Linthorpe Road while on patrol at approximately 3pm on Saturday 1 March.
Its driver was seen by officers travelling in the vehicle while inhaling gas from a balloon.
Upon spotting officers, the driver fled, and the car was located a short time later on Bush Street.
Officers have since recovered the vehicle and following a search seized gas cannisters.
Numerous enquiries are now ongoing to identify the driver.
Sergeant Adam Woodland, from Middlesbrough’s proactive team, said: “We will continue to clamp down on drug drivers who are putting members of the public at risk by driving dangerously on our roads under the influence of drugs.
“I would like to remind motorists that inhaling gas cannisters, and being in possession of them, is a criminal offence as a class C drug.
