Warning Over Leaving Vehicles Running and Unattended Whilst De-Icing

This morning, police received a report that a car had been stolen from a driveway in Eaglescliffe after it had been left with the engine running to de-ice at ......

.

...... around 7.55am on Burnmoor Drive.

The owner had left the blue Seat Leon unattended for only a couple of minutes and when they returned it had gone.

Two vehicles were stolen in the same circumstances in January in Stockton and Middlesbrough, also having been left unattended with the engines running to de-ice.

Detective Inspector Glen Westmoreland, from Stockton Volume Crime Team, said: “We see this happening time and time again when the weather gets cold.

“Some people probably think that this won’t happen to them, but my message to those people is that it could happen to anyone.

“With more icy weather on the way, please remember that it only takes seconds for an opportunist thief to see their chance and take it. Do not leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running.”

Anyone who may have witnessed anyone acting suspiciously in the area of Burnmoor Drive this morning or anyone who may have information regarding the theft of the blue Seat Leon is asked to contact PC Ewan Barclay on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/
