January Crime Prevention Blog

Happy New Year! By Crime Prevention & Architectural Liaison Officer Gerry McBride

Well, that’s another Christmas over and my New Year Resolutions have already been made.

For my first Crime Prevention blog of 2018, I would like to set you a New Year’s challenge to get into the habit of locking windows and doors of your home and car at all times (if you don’t do this already).

One in three burglaries is because of insecure doors and windows. It might be a challenge for some of you to get into the habit of keeping your home and vehicle secure at first, but it is important that you do it, even when you are at home and you should encourage your family to do the same.

In the months ahead we will be expecting some frosty mornings which means thefts of vehicles will most likely be on the increase as some people leave the engines of their vehicles running with the doors unlocked to defrost before they get in their car. This is a huge mistake and an easy opportunity for a criminal to steal your car.

To tie in with keeping your homes and vehicles secure I would like to offer you one more piece of advice. Get all your valuable items such as bikes, tablets, game consoles, garden tools and anything else of value, property marked. We can do this for you at one of our property marking events with our Dot Peen machine and if your items are ever stolen and officers recover them, they will be able to reunite the item with you! Dates for our property marking events are always announced on the Cleveland and Neighbourhood Police Team Facebook pages.

If you have any information about a crime, please contact Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
