Appeal for CCTV Following Fatal Collision in Middlesbrough

Police are appealing for owners of private CCTV to come forward as part of an investigation into a fatal collision.

The collision happened as a man was crossing Ormesby Road in Middlesbrough, adjacent to Ormesby Grange Care Home, just before 10.15pm on Saturday 26th May.

69-year-old pedestrian John Byrne sadly died in hospital following the incident, which involved a black Skoda Octavia.

His family described him as a “loving father and special granddad” following his death.

The 28-year-old male driver of the Skoda was arrested in connection with the incident and was released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.

Officers would now like to hear from anyone who may have private CCTV in the area between The Eagle Public House on Rothbury Road and Ormesby Road, where the collision occurred.

Police believe that Mr Byrne left The Eagle Public House on Rothbury Road at around 10pm and he could have made his way along a public footpath next to the Church of Ascention on Penrith Road, which leads to Ormesby Road. At the time he was wearing a brown leather jacket.

Anyone who may have information is asked to contact PC Charlotte Ryans from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit via the 101 number, quoting event number 94119.
