Teenager Arrested after Reportedly Assaulting Police Officer

Yesterday evening (Tuesday 27th August) officers were called to Aske Road in Redcar where it was reported that a group of youths were causing criminal damage and a disturbance in the street.

Police attended the scene and attempted to speak with one of the males, which reportedly resulted in the officers being shouted and sworn at and one officer was punched in the face and neck several times.

A 16-year-old male teenager was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and using threatening/ abusive words/ behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress. He currently remains in custody.

The officer suffered minor injuries and attended hospital for treatment.

Sergeant David Armstrong said: “It is completely unacceptable for an officer to be assaulted or abused when they are carrying out their duties.

“Our officer’s work relentlessly every day to keep the people in our communities safe and we will not tolerate any form of abuse, or any other form of unacceptable behaviour or conduct, directed at officers, staff or volunteers. Anyone found to be doing so will be dealt with robustly.”
