I write in connection with your request for information dated 6th April 2020 and received by this office on 7th April 2020. Below are the questions raised in your request and our response.
Please can you tell me, as of April 1st 2020, how many officers currently working within your force have been specifically trained to be first responders to reports of domestic abuse made by the public?
All officers on joining the police undertake initial police learning development programme. This includes training on dealing with domestic incidents as a first responder. Currently there are 406 officers in Response officer roles who will have undertaken this programme or are working their way through it. Officers will attain an accreditation for investigating which will include investigating offences committed in domestic abuse situations and the force has 847 officers trained to this level. More specialist investigators get a higher level of accreditation and the force has 416 officers trained to this next level.
In addition to this in 2018/2019 the force delivered two further training packages covering domestic abuse, one focussing on coercive controlling behaviour, which was attended by 712 officers and one more generally about vulnerability which was attended by 857 officers.
