FOI 499-24 Violent Crime Stats

I write in connection with regards to your Freedom of Information request.  Below is your request and our response.

Please can I have the statistics of victims and perpetrators of all types violent crimes based on race and ethnicity between the years 2003-2023 covering the Cleveland area.

2006. a) We only hold information from when we started using Niche which was mid-2005 so the full year starts at 2006. Please note that the National Crime Recording Standards (NCRS) rules have changed over time, for example, stalking and harassment crimes being included under violence against the person. This means that volumes are not comparing like for like over time.

Number of violence against the person offences by the self-defined ethnic group of the victim

Number of offenders by their self-defined ethnic group recorded on solved* violence against the person offences

Please note that there may be more than one offender for the crime.

*Solved = charge, caution, community resolution, taken into consideration, youth triage.

Please could I also have the above statistics broken down by population for each ethnicity group.

We have looked at the above question and must advise you that we consider the Freedom of information Act 2000 Exemption 21 (Information Accessible by other means) is engaged in relation to this request this is a class based and absolute exemption, requiring no prejudice or public interest to be considered.

The Cleveland Police response to your request is unique and it should be noted that Police Forces do not use generic systems or identical procedures to capture and record data therefore responses from Cleveland Police should not be used as a comparison with any other force response you receive.

The Freedom of Information Code of Practice (see below link) states that a request for internal review should be made within 20 working days of the date on this response or 40 working days if extenuating circumstances to account for the delay can be evidenced.
