I write in connection with regards to your Freedom of Information request. Below is your request and our response.
- For either each of the last five complete calendar or business years please provide the numbers of reported incidents of rape or attempted rape you classified as N100.
- a) The following tables shows the volume of N100 Rape allegations recorded in each calendar year. There are 3 categories for N100s as below.

- For either each of the last five complete calendar or business years please provide the number of rape and attempted rape crimes cancelled by the service (force) crime registrar.
My understanding is that rape and attempted rape crimes can be cancelled for the following reasons: See amendments
AMENDMENT - Transfer to another force (to investigate) Additional Verifiable Information (AVI) (held to determine that no notifiable crime occurred) Duplicate crime already recorded in error (by mistake).
- a) The below table contains the volume per calendar year of Rapes that have been cancelled.

Please break down the answer to Q2 to show the number of (i) rapes and (ii) attempted rapes in each cancelled category that you use.
- a) Crimes codes are the same for either rape or attempt rape so cannot be broken down to either a rape or attempt as they are all classed as Rape.

Caveats to the data.
- N100s aren’t crimes, they are allegations that go on to be investigated then either crimed or left as a record. This doesn’t mean they will not be crimed in the future.
- Rape cancellations are not done lightly, we have robust measures in place before a rape crime is cancelled.
Please note that all statistical data supplied in relation to Freedom of Information requests is a snapshot of data held at the time the request was received by the Freedom of Information office and is subject to constant change/updates.
The Cleveland Police response to your request is unique and it should be noted that Police Forces do not use generic systems or identical procedures to capture and record data therefore responses from Cleveland Police should not be used as a comparison with any other force response you receive.
If you are not satisfied with this response or any actions taken in dealing with your request, you have the right to request an independent internal review of your case under our review procedure. The Freedom of Information Code of Practice (see below link) states that a request for internal review should be made within 20 working days of the date on this response or 40 working days if extenuating circumstances to account for the delay can be evidenced. Public authorities are not obliged to accept internal reviews after this date.
