Officers are today continuing enquiries into a single vehicle collision on the A689 Stockton Road, Hartlepool in the early hours of today (Friday 24th November).
It happened just after 1.15am and involved a white Ford Transit van travelling towards Hartlepool colliding with a tree.
The 25-year-old male driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, sustained serious injuries and was taken to James Cook University Hospital where he remains receiving treatment.
A temporary road closure was put in place on both sides of the road from Greatham to Truro Drive to allow emergency services and local authority colleagues to deal with the situation.
The road re-opened shortly after 5am.
We would appeal for anyone who has not yet spoken to police and who has any information or dashcam footage to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 232237.
