Ten more arrested for Middlesbrough summer disorder

Ten more people have been arrested this week in connection with the disorder in Middlesbrough in the summer.

Police arrested eight people on suspicion of involvement in the violent disorder that took place in Middlesbrough on 4th August this year.

Officers swooped on addresses in Middlesbrough yesterday, Tuesday 3rd December, during early morning raids - taking the total number of arrests for the disorder in Middlesbrough to 108.

Two men aged 29 and 40, along with six juveniles, were arrested on suspicion of involvement in public order across Parliament Road, Linthorpe Road, Union Street and surrounding areas in Middlesbrough.

All eight were taken to police custody for questioning and later released on bail pending further enquiries.

A 26-year-old man handed himself in at Middlesbrough Police Station on Monday morning (2nd December) in response to images released by police of suspects involved in the disorder. He was questioned by officers and released on bail pending further enquiries.

Another juvenile handed himself into police today, Wednesday 4 December 2024.

The disorder ranges from throwing rocks, bottles and planks of wood at police officers; throwing rocks at business premises and homes, smashing windows; breaking into shops and stealing property; jumping on cars and smashing windscreens and spitting at police officers.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused to businesses and homes in the area, including £300,000 worth of damage caused to university buildings at Teesside University.

These arrests follow months of investigative work by a dedicated team of detectives who continue to trawl through CCTV, mobile phone and online footage of individuals suspected of being involved in the disorder that brought fear and harm to the local community.

Detective Inspector Richard Hodgkinson, who led on yesterday’s arrests, said: “I’m pleased to say that we have made further arrests, and I hope that this provides some reassurance to our communities that we will continue to be relentless in bringing those involved to justice.

“People living in the area, shop workers, business owners and students at Teesside University were left fearful following the events. Our area should be a safe and welcoming place for those coming to live, work and study, and by working closely with our communities we won’t let this one event change that.”
