At approximately 10.15pm on Tuesday 20 February two women entered a shop on The Viewley Centre and while armed with a knife threated a member of staff to open the till.
When refused, the pair then stole alcohol and cigarettes from the store before fleeing.
After conducting CCTV enquiries police located two women, aged 41 and 46, and they were both arrested on suspicion of robbery.
T/Detective Sergeant Andy Sinclair, from Middlesbrough CID, said: “Thankfully the member of staff was unharmed but understandably left shaken by what had happened.
“After officers swiftly attended to the store and reviewed CCTV we were able to identify the suspects and apprehend them.
“They are both currently in custody waiting to be questioned.”
