A victim has praised an officer for his sensitivity and professionalism after her attacker was jailed.
Paul Evans befriended the victim and invited her to his home in Middlesbrough for a party but when she arrived at the address, no one else was there.
The 56-year-old told her that more people would arrive later and plied the victim with alcohol before forcing himself on her.
Officers launched an investigation in March 2021 after the victim bravely came forward to the police to report the incident which happened between 1989 and 1990.
Evans was arrested and charged with indecent assault and appeared in court where he denied the offence. Thankfully, the jury saw through his lies and he was found guilty.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday 1st April where he was jailed for nine years plus one year on extended licence.
In some feedback from the victim, she praised investigating officer Detective Constable John Smith for his professionalism and thanked him for his hard work.
She said: “He has been professional, and also human. He is the best advertisement for a ‘good copper’. It’s been really hard for me but, I’ve never felt alone, belittled or unbelieved.
“I just wish I could show more gratitude because this case wouldn’t have got to court without his hard work. I can’t thank him enough for believing me, treating me like a person and conducting a proper investigation.”
DC John Smith said: “Evans’ cruel lies forced the victim to give evidence in court and relive such a traumatic event in her life. Thanks to her evidence however, Evans was found guilty.
“I’d like to commend the victim for her courage and her unwavering support throughout this whole process. It was extremely brave for her to report the incident to us and then follow it through the court process.
“I hope this reassures anyone who may have experienced rape or sexual assault that you will be listened to, you will be believed, and you will be supported throughout. We are here to help whenever you’re ready to report something to us.”
