A 39-year-old man was getting into his vehicle at The Municipal car park when he was approached by a man who punched him, grabbed hold of his bag, and then attempted to drag it away.
The victim managed to hold onto the bag despite the offender continuing to assault him.
Upon spotting the robbery taking place, an off-duty police officer ran towards them as the offender fled however, he caught up with him and was detained.
He then arrested the 44-year-old on suspicion of robbery, and he was taken to custody where he is currently being questioned.
The robbery occurred at approximately 5.15pm on Thursday 23 January.
Detective Inspector Carl Blenkinsop, from Stockton’s CID, said: “The offender is believed to have assaulted the victim numerous times in a bid to steal his bag however he failed and then attempted to flee.
“An officer, who was off duty at the time, saw the man running away and quickly gave chase which led to him being detained.
“He is now in police custody being questioned and our enquiries are continuing.”
