The 27-year-old man, from Redcar, was detained by police on Wednesday 15 January and taken to police custody.
He is currently being questioned for shop thefts that occurred between Thursday 12 December 2024 and Sunday 12 January 2025.
In a month, the man is believed to have stolen a variety of items from convenience stores including five offences at the Co-op on Redhill Road and three at the Spar on High Newham Road, both in Stockton.
On one occasion he is alleged to have stolen items and then returned to the same store on the same day to steal food.
Inspector Andrew Vickers, from Stockton’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “After receiving numerous reports of theft offences officers have been conducting various enquiries including viewing CCTV footage in a bid to identify the person responsible.
“This has led to officers making an arrest and a man being questioned in custody.
“Officers are working hard to deter potential shoplifters with regular patrols alongside partners in the town centre which took place over the festive period and will continue in the New Year.”
Anyone who has information in relation to thefts can provide information by calling Cleveland Police on 101 or visiting the website.
