The 20-year-old, from Saltburn, was arrested on Monday 13 October and taken to police custody.
Following questioning, he was charged with section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent to resist or prevent arrest and remanded in custody.
He is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday 15 October.
The charge relates to a Harbour police officer stopping a vehicle on Majuba car park in Redcar at approximately 2.40am on Saturday 11 October.
A quantity of drugs and cash were seized from the vehicle.
In an attempt to arrest the driver, he made off and following a short pursuit on foot, he was detained and is then believed to have assaulted the police officer before fleeing the area.
The officer required treatment at hospital for injuries to his head and face.
